Smile & Laughter Lines
What are smiles lines? well, smile lines are wrinkles or creases in the skin that occur on the face and run from the side of the nose all the way to the corners of the lips. They are referred to as nasolabial folds, to be distinguished from lines that occur on the cheeks, also often referred to as smile lines.
Nasolabial folds are one of the most commonly treated areas of the skin. Their appearance can often leave otherwise plump and youthful skin looking dull and sullen.
Smile lines occur when the skin is depleted of collagen due to continual creasing at one particular point. The loss of volume and elasticity can make a face look much older and contribute to a permanent ‘unhappy’ look.
Fortunately, there are various ways smiling lines can be treated and prevented.
What are smile lines
Smile lines, nasolabial lines, or marionette lines, are wrinkles on the face that start at the nose and run all the way down to the corners of the mouth.
Smile lines are different from wrinkles that appear on other parts of the face, and they often appear as a single, deep crease, rather than many shallow lines.
How are smile lines formed
Smile lines form the same way any other lines or wrinkles on the face are formed. They appear as a result of collagen being depleted from the skin due to constant creasing of a particular area. Collagen also reduces as a natural part of the ageing process, alongside elastin, which is a protein that would usually provide support.
Facial movements and expressions are controlled by firm facial muscles, and it is widely believed that smiling activates at least two dozen of them. While your body is producing less collagen, robust and repetitive movement of the muscles creases the epidermis above them. The age at which most people start to get laughter lines can vary from your late twenties to your early thirties.
Constant creasing at the same spot breaks down the skin and weakens the elastic bond that gives it its volume. The loss of that elasticity allows the skin to drop and weaken, which forms a line on the face. Depending on how much collagen was lost, the lines can range from shallow and subtle, very deep and prominent.

How to treat smile lines?
Depending on the severity of the lines, as well as the overall health of the patient’s skin, there are a variety of ways smile lines can be treated.
Some of the most common treatments smile lines are:
Exercising facial musclesWhile exercises for facial muscles can help treat smile lines, they are only valid when treating and preventing milder cases of smile lines.
These kinds of exercises are not useful when used on older, more dull skin with deep, visible lines.
Facial treatmentsFacial treatments can be used to treat milder cases of smile lines.
Treatments used to restore the skin’s vitality, and elasticity can be a useful tool in reducing the appearance of smile lines. In some cases even preventing them.
Frequent exfoliating treatments can be effective at preventing major smile lines from forming, as they help maintain the vitality and smoothness of the skin.
Treatments such as Microdermabrasion and chemical peels, especially glycolic acid peels, also help regenerate the skin and allow a new, plump, voluminous layer to be formed. By continually promoting the creation of new skin, the appearance of smile lines can be significantly minimized, and in some cases even prevented.
Not only do these treatments help prevent smile lines from forming, but they also have a significant impact on the health and appearance of the skin. This way they are often recommended to patients as a way to maintain the results of other treatments.
Botox type injectionsBotox injections and other injectable type products are often used to treat smile lines. Botulinum toxin is used to treat a wide variety of skin imperfections and wrinkles and has been proven to be safe and effective.
Botox injections can smooth out smile lines and drastically improve the overall look of the face.
And while Botox injections are most commonly used to treat already formed smile lines, they can also be used as an effective preventative treatment.
Injecting small amounts of Botox into areas where smile lines are most likely to develop will drastically reduce the chance of them forming.
This is due to the fact that small amounts of Botox are effective at conditioning the muscle and training it on how to contract and move. The limited contraction of the muscle results in less creasing of the skin, which ultimately reduces the number of wrinkles and lines that will form on the face.
A consultation with an experienced practitioner will provide patients will all the information they need to determine whether or not preventive Botox injections are the best treatment.
Dermal FillersDermal fillers are a safe and effective way to treat smile lines. Unlike Botox, these injectable wrinkle fillers do not affect the muscle responsible for the crease or wrinkle on the face but fill the weakened, creased area with one or several different substances.
There are different types of dermal fillers that can be used to treat skin imperfections, and they include:
• Hyaluronic fillers
• Synthetic fillers
• Collagen Fillers
• Autologous fillers
The most common type of dermal fillers used on the skin is hyaluronic fillers.
While dermal fillers are very effective when it comes to minimising the appearance of skin wrinkles and smile lines, their results are temporary, and usually, ranging from 4 months to a year.
Dermal fillers are an excellent choice for patients looking for a more natural and less permanent skin treatment. As hyaluronic dermal fillers are usually applied in small amounts, and the procedure is frequently repeated, more natural results can be achieved, and the intensity of the treatment can be finely tweaked according to the patient’s personal preferences.
Some studies have also shown that repeating the treatments can stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen, resulting in fewer lines and wrinkles are formed over time.
FaceliftsTraditional surgical facelifts can help reduce the appearance of smile lines, but the practice has mostly been replaced with less invasive treatments such as dermal fillers and Botox injections.
While facelifts provide the face with an immediate and visible lift, smoothing out all superficial wrinkles, the more profound, more prominent lines such as smile lines are not treated, but instead temporarily smoothed out.
