As we age, the wrinkles on our body increase and most of us accept that this is natural, right?
But as the years pass, wrinkles may appear in many different places and often in areas that we don’t want them to.
Annoyingly this is especially true for chest wrinkles and the wrinkles on the decolletage area, an annoying problem that is difficult to hide. To learn what causes wrinkles you can read our detailed wrinkles condition page.
Now I’m sure you will agree:
The skin that’s found on the chest is one of the most sensitive areas of our body. Women either love or hate this area.
It’s one of the first signs of real ageing. And it’s also widely known that the skin below the neck can reveal more about a women’s age than any other body part.
As a GP and an Aesthetics Clinic owner, I work closely with female clients in their 50’s, and 60’s, who ask me what can be done about their sun damaged skin, and décolleté area, especially as many lead a healthy, active lifestyle and are keen to look great in fashionable clothing, which includes evening and casual wear, that they want to wear with confidence. But many clients are fearful about looking older than their years and conscious of sun damage, lines and wrinkles;
So, let’s see what you can do to prolong a youthful appearance, prevent lines and wrinkles and manage the causes of your skin concerns.
What is causing the cleavage wrinkles and the deep wrinkles on the decolletage neckline? Is there any possible prevention?
- Try keeping your skin away from too much sun exposure.
The prolonged exposure to the sun is providing extra blood in the blood vessels, which causes sunburns.
The sunburn is thickening of the blood vessel walls, so along with ageing, the vessels will continue to weaken. Therefore, Collagen is lost from the skin’s structure. The skin on the chest is the thinnest part of the skin, and this is the reason why it is easily noticeable.
Years of exposure to the sun may cause an Actinic keratosis. The skin can become covered with scaly patches. It takes time for these patches to grow and develop. If it is not treated on time, this may develop into skin cancer. The spots, in time, may grow into squamous cell carcinoma. The best prevention is to reduce prolonged exposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) light and also use a high SPF sunblock.
- Don’t forget to supply yourself with enough vitamins.
The most common active ingredients found in many decolletage treatments are derivatives of vitamin C. You could buy some lemons or limes. Slice them and apply to the areas of your décolletage necklace 3-4 times per week. This is a useful method for lightening, sun wrinkles. But why not consider trying a Vitamin C smoothing cream produced by Obagi or Alumier MD, Neostrata also produce serums rich in vitamin C that can help with treating sun damaged skin.
- Choose wisely what kind of soap you are using.
Most soaps are harsh and containing ingredients that strip the skin of its natural oils. The skin on the décolletage area is drier because it includes fewer glands compared to the other areas of the skin. Choose smoother soaps, and gently rub your skin.
- Put on a homemade mask.
A homemade mask is another option that helps in the fight against wrinkles. All you need to do is to follow the exact instructions and always use fresh ingredients. This is a front-row solution that is cheap. Apply the mask to your chest area and hold it for 10 minutes.
- Moisturize your skin.
One of the reasons why we have décolletage and cleavage wrinkles is because we dehydrate our skin. Moisturize the décolleté area and the chest area every night before you go to bed. Repeat the same thing in the morning.
- Wear a well-structured bra while you are exercising.
Many women tend to wear a sports bra while they are exercising. But, a sports bra is constricting the skin tissue, at the same time producing folds that may result include cleavage wrinkles.
- Normal life-occurring events.
Pregnancy, hormonal changes, and menopause can cause cleavage wrinkles and deep wrinkles on the décolletage neckline.
I have deep décolletage and cleavage wrinkles. I have tried different cosmetics products, but nothing helped me. What is next?
You shouldn’t worry.
The good news is that there are different types of active treatments to try that can help you.
You may be a fan of high street products such as Clarins, Clinique and Loreal, in particular, their moisturisers, but they all lack active ingredients.
If you are serious about making a change, protecting, rejuvenating and reversing ageing of your skin, then technologically advanced cosmeceutical products that contain effective active ingredients will provide the best visible results. Generally, these products can only be found and purchased from aesthetic clinics.
Professional Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels are a treatment where the layers of the skin are treated with an acid solution, which chemically exfoliates the aged and damaged areas. With this, the youthful features of your skin can be restored.
Different types of chemical solutions can be applied to the skin. The right choice depends on how intense you want the peel and what depth your doctor recommends the peel to be done at (medium or mild). Treating the chest area and the décolletage involves using medium and mild peels.
In medium depth peels, a Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is used. TCA causes the peeling of the outermost, damaged layer of the skin. Medium depth peels are used for treating fine wrinkles, superficial blemishes, and pigment problems. For visible results, more than one treatment is required. The healing time is not very prolonged.
Mild depth peels (or also called superficial peels) are made with Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHAs). AHA consists of glycolic, lactic and fruit acids. Mild peels are used for smoothing and balancing the fair skin, and for treating wrinkles and pigmentation. The recovery time is super short, and repeated sessions are required to obtain excellent results.
Before using any treatment, gaining medical advice from a doctor-specialist is crucial. It is essential to go for a consultation to have a full check on your medical history and any skin-related conditions.
- Obagi Blue Peel Radiance
Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is a salicylic acid-based chemical peel.
It is applied by specialists and only by previous medical advice. Depending on the condition of the skin, the strength of the therapy will be defined.
The whole procedure lasts a maximum of 1 hour, and in most cases, anaesthesia is not required. Very light burning sensations might be felt for a few seconds. More than one peel is needed to achieve the desired results. After two days, your skin may begin to peel in areas where there is lots of movement, and this will last a few days. Seven to ten days are needed for your skin to get better. After the tenth day, you will be able to notice the enormous difference. Your skin will be softer, stronger, younger and healthier. After a few treatments, you will have achieved the result that you wanted.
The price for an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance varies from £100 to £200. It depends on whether you would like a mild or medium peel.
- NeoStrata Glycolic Skin Peel
NeoStrata ProSystem Peel is an effective, superficial to medium depth peel. Four different concentrations of rejuvenating glycolic acid peels may be found – 20%, 35%, 50% and 70%. It consists of three alpha hydroxyl acids: glycolic acid, citric acid, and Mandelic acid. These acids are naturally found in fruits. Mandelic acid increases the procollagen and hyaluronic acid expression in your skin. It is a treatment that can be only found and performed in Dermatologist and Cosmetic Doctor Clinics.
This skin peel can be used for two different purposes: for skin that has a higher tendency for acne, and for skin that has wrinkles and signs of sun damage.
The NeoStrata Anti-Aging Peel Solution consists of glycolic acid, fruit enzyme, and an anti-ageing peptide complex. This combination of ingredients reduces the manifestation of cleavage wrinkles, at the same time improving the elasticity of the skin.
On the other hand, the NeoStrata Brightening Peel Solution is the right choice for brightening the dark blemishes that you have on your skin. It is made of glycolic acid, fruit enzyme and Genowhite which is the newest generation of brightening peptides. This type of peel will harmonise and tone the colour of your skin. The dark spots will be reduced, and the skin will get a new, smoother look.
The whole procedure is fast, lasts around 15 minutes. The skin cells from the surface will be removed, and you will be able to notice an immediate difference. There is no need for anaesthesia. You will be able to get to work the very same day, without pain.
Usually, at least 4 treatments are needed to get the look that you have desired.
The costs depend on the size of the area that will be treated, but mainly varies £80-£130 per treatment.
